Physical Therapy Asst

This is a full-time, temporary position not to exceed one (1) year. The incumbent serves as a Physical Therapy Assistant at the VA Medical Center in Beckley, WV providing services to the assigned area of Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line. The PTA works under the supervision of a physical therapist. The incumbent provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The PTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by a Physical Therapist, but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of a Physical Therapist. The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out within the medical center including various clinical, administrative and patient care areas associated with Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) . Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provides direct patient care to the assigned caseload. This may include CLC residents, acute care patients or outpatients. Completes all documentation related to the treatment, except for the initial evaluation and discharge summary. Independently implements components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist. Communicates with the physician/nurse/other therapy staff as appropriate about changes in the patient's clinical condition. Observes and assesses treatment effect. Recommends changes to physical therapist and/or physician. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and assesses effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching, as appropriate. Demonstrates the ability to recognize individual and cultural differences and respond appropriately in all aspects of physical therapy services. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence based physical therapy practice. Demonstrates knowledge of physical therapy data collection and ongoing assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluation and interventions. Demonstrates knowledge of basic biological and medical science to assess patient data; make a preliminary determination of their needs, develop treatment goals and objectives and implement patient treatment plans. Reinforce instructions in resident and family teaching, specific to growth and development of early, middle, late adult, old, middle old and old residents. Participates with a degree of self-direction according to individual patient plan of care. Generates consults and prosthetic requests for equipment, with prior approval of the Licensed Physical Therapist. Independently documents all patient care rendered and initiates consults for appropriate patient care equipment inherent to the physical therapy scope of practice. Other duties as assigned. Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). English Language Proficiency:

In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. GS-07 Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-06). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team. 2. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews. 3. Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist. Assignment. Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs. This is the full performance level for the PTA. Assignments include:
service as an active team member in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program such as geriatrics, amputee, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiac rehabilitation, aquatics, orthopedics, or wound care, etc.; prepare, provide, and supervise clinical training experiences for PTA students; and independently provide patient education to patients and their caregivers. Work includes regular and recurring physical exertion in standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, gripping and walking. Moderate to heavy lifting is required to assist patients and operate equipment. Sitting is required in meetings and for conducting administrative work. Above average agility may be desirable in defending oneself (or others) against physical attack/abuse. Work may require good physical health, normal use of arms and legs and good visual and auditory acuity.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
